Final Splash: Beloved Family-Run Aquarium Store Shuts Its Doors for Good

Final Splash: Beloved Family-Run Aquarium Store Shuts Its Doors for Good

A family-run aquatics store in Parkstone is set to close its doors permanently, marking a premature end to a venture that began less than a year ago. Something’s Fishy, located on Sea View Road, has announced it will cease all trading by October 14 after struggling to overcome persistent financial and operational pressures.

Owner Jacob Jerram shared the news with his customers on social media, describing the decision as one made with a “very heavy heart.” The shop, which first opened its doors in November 2025, faced an uphill battle from its inception. Mr. Jerram previously characterized the business as “precarious” from the start, citing a series of unexpected hurdles that appeared immediately after the lease was signed.

The closure comes after a period of intense effort to keep the business afloat. In July of this year, the shop temporarily halted operations in an attempt to pivot its business model and alleviate mounting strains on both the shop’s finances and the family’s personal life. However, these efforts ultimately proved insufficient.

Mr. Jerram has been transparent about the significant personal toll the venture took on him, revealing that he often worked 16-hour days to keep the store running. He also expressed disappointment regarding the public reaction during difficult periods, noting that the business faced negative comments whenever the doors were forced to close temporarily.

“From the day we signed the lease, we ran into hurdles we were not expecting or prepared for, and without external support, we made the best of what we could,” Mr. Jerram said. “Over the past few months, we have done everything we possibly can to keep the business going… unfortunately, despite our best efforts, the time has come to accept that we can no longer continue as we are.”

Despite the disappointment, Mr. Jerram reflected on the deeper meaning of the shop, emphasizing that the store was intended to be more than just a retail space. “Something’s Fishy has been about so much more than selling fish. It has been about sharing our passion for the aquatic hobby, helping people create their own little underwater worlds, meeting wonderful people and being part of a community that shares our love for these incredible animals.”

The owner extended his gratitude to the local community, thanking every customer who supported the independent business, engaged with their social media, or offered kind words during the shop’s tenure.

To clear remaining inventory, the store will host a final sale. The premises will be closed from October 5 to October 9, before reopening for a final four-day farewell sale from October 10 to October 14. Mr. Jerram stated that while walking away is “heart-breaking,” he will look back on his time serving the Parkstone community with pride.
