Federal Judge Slams Brakes on Taxpayer-Funded Pro-Trump Ad Blitz

A federal judge on Sunday ordered the Trump administration to immediately cease airing television advertisements funded by U.S. government coffers that portray President Donald Trump in a favorable light. The ruling marks a significant legal setback for the administration, which has faced mounting criticism over the use of taxpayer dollars to distribute content that critics argue constitutes overt political propaganda.

U.S. District Judge Jennifer Rochon of the Southern District of New York issued the injunction, siding with a coalition of plaintiffs that included the watchdog group Common Cause, Democratic Alabama state House candidate Robert Hunter, and a New York-based labor union and its political action committee.

“Plaintiffs have demonstrated that they are likely to succeed on the merits, will suffer irreparable harm in the absence of an injunction, the balance of the equities tips in their favor, and an injunction serves the public interest,” Judge Rochon wrote in her order.

The litigation is one of several high-profile legal challenges aimed at the administration’s ad campaign, including a similar suit filed by the Democratic National Committee. The ads in question, some of which were noted for being nearly identical to the president’s 2024 campaign materials, drew intense fire from opponents who alleged that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) had improperly diverted federal funds for the president’s personal political gain.

In a court filing submitted on Saturday, the administration argued that the issue was largely moot, claiming that DHS had instructed its vendors to cease purchasing ad time beyond Sunday. However, Judge Rochon rejected the assertion that the matter was resolved. She ordered the administration to actively “cancel or cause to be cancelled” any advertisements currently scheduled for dissemination, including those slated to air on Sunday night. Furthermore, the judge explicitly barred the administration from using funds appropriated to DHS for the development, production, or distribution of the challenged spots.

In a joint statement, the plaintiffs hailed the decision as a victory for governmental integrity. “We are pleased the court acted swiftly to prevent more taxpayer dollars from being used for such blatantly unlawful political propaganda,” the group stated. “There is no legal justification—and no precedent—for the president to use the machinery of the government and funds set aside by Congress for other uses to influence electoral outcomes that further his own agenda.”

Common Cause President and CEO Virginia Kase Solomón emphasized that while the injunction stops the immediate broadcast, the broader legal battle remains ongoing. “We won’t stop until this administration is held fully accountable, and no president from any party can waste and abuse taxpayer funds for propaganda ever again,” Solomón said.

The White House, the Office of Management and Budget, and the DHS did not immediately respond to requests for comment. MAGA Inc., a super PAC that the president indicated last week would assist in future funding for the ads, also remained silent following the ruling.
