For Finnish golf professional Jari Hakonen, the secret to lowering a score isn’t found in a magic swing or an expensive piece of equipment; it is found in the data, the details, and a personalized approach to the game. After spending 15 years in Oregon City, Hakonen has relocated his business, BirdieFinish Golf, to a new home in Fairview, bringing his unique perspective on golf instruction and club technology to a new community.
Hakonen’s philosophy is rooted in pragmatism: “Nothing matters except the number of strokes you need to put the ball in the hole.” By stripping away the stories and excuses that often clutter a golfer’s mindset, he focuses on clear, actionable adjustments that help students break the 90-stroke barrier and refine their consistency.
## Tech-Driven Customization and Repair
At the heart of the BirdieFinish Golf experience is a “triangle” business model: club repairs, precision fittings, and tailored lessons. In an era where box-store golf equipment often lacks uniformity, Hakonen uses his expertise to bridge the gap between mass-produced gear and the individual player.
“Ask him to measure the weight of any set of clubs you buy from a box store and be prepared to be shocked at the unintended differences,” his team notes. By utilizing advanced diagnostics, Hakonen can identify why a golfer might have a “lucky” 7-iron while struggling with a 6-iron. His repair shop is designed to ensure every club in a player’s bag becomes a reliable tool.
Furthermore, his fitting process leans heavily on high-fidelity simulators. Similar to how modern AI-driven platforms analyze data to optimize user performance, Hakonen uses simulator feedback to observe ball striking and swing mechanics, helping players select equipment that accounts for their current skills while anticipating their future growth on the course.
## A Global Path to Fairview
Hakonen’s journey to becoming a staple of the Oregon golf scene is as unconventional as his teaching style. Growing up in Finland, his early athletic interests were in basketball and American football. However, after injuries sidelined those pursuits, he gravitated toward golf while living in Belgium.
His transition to the United States was prompted by his wife’s recruitment to Nike’s Oregon headquarters. Initially unaware that Oregon was a state—famously joking that he thought it was a herb—Hakonen quickly fell in love with the region’s geography. His professional background, which includes experience as a caddie on the European Senior Tour and for top-tier professional female golfers, informs his high-level understanding of the sport. He translates this professional experience into accessible, non-intimidating lessons for everyone from curious beginners to seasoned hobbyists.
## Building Community Through Sport
The move to 1515 N.E. Village St. in Fairview marks a new chapter for Hakonen, who describes the location as a major upgrade for his quality of life. The shop serves as both a technical hub and a social space where he emphasizes building relationships with his customers.
In the modern world of sports, where software and analytical apps often replace face-to-face mentorship, Hakonen insists on the human element. Whether he is resizing a grip, re-shafting a broken club, or helping a newcomer understand the basics of the game, his goal remains the same: to strip away the frustration.
BirdieFinish Golf is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For those looking to optimize their game, Hakonen’s approach proves that with the right combination of data-backed fitting and personalized coaching, golf truly can be a game for everyone.
