Tragedy at Five-Star Bengaluru Hotel: Two Foreign Nationals Die in Electrocution Incident

A routine holiday and a professional layover turned into a catastrophic tragedy at the five-star Hotel Conrad in central Bengaluru on Friday, October 30. Two foreign nationals lost their lives due to suspected electrocution while using the hotel’s swimming pool, leaving guests and staff in deep shock.

The victims have been identified as Juraj Horvat, 45, a Slovakian tourist, and Alexander Maximilian Theiss, 57, a German national and crew member for Lufthansa Airlines. The incident has prompted an urgent investigation into the safety protocols of one of the city’s most prominent luxury properties.

Sequence of Events

According to official reports, the incident unfolded late in the afternoon. Silvia Hotuatova, 47, the wife of the Slovakian victim, told authorities that the couple had checked into the hotel earlier that day as part of a long-planned trip to India. Around 5:15 p.m., Mr. Horvat went to the swimming pool. Shortly thereafter, Ms. Hotuatova heard a loud noise from the pool area and rushed to the deck, only to discover her husband unresponsive in the water.

Chaos ensued as hotel staff and other guests rushed to assist. It soon became apparent that the water was electrified. An American national, Matthew Phelan, who was present at the scene, attempted to provide life-saving support, including cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), before emergency services arrived.

Fatal Outcome and Rescue Efforts

The victims were rushed to Manipal Hospital, but the medical team faced a grim situation. A spokesperson for the hospital confirmed that Juraj Horvat was brought in suffering from cardiac arrest. Despite intensive resuscitation efforts by emergency medical staff, he could not be revived and was declared dead.

The second victim, Alexander Theiss, who was part of a Lufthansa crew currently on a layover in Bengaluru, arrived at the hospital with no vital signs and was declared “brought dead.” The loss of the airline crew member has reportedly left his colleagues and the hotel staff severely traumatized.

Two other individuals were also hospitalized following the incident. A 26-year-old hotel staff member, who heroically jumped into the water to rescue the victims, was admitted in a state of shock and remains under medical observation. Similarly, the American national, Mr. Phelan, who had narrowly escaped the electric current by swimming to safety, was treated for shock and is reported to be in stable condition.

Investigation Underway

Local authorities have launched a formal inquiry to determine the source of the electrical leakage that led to the tragedy. Questions are being raised regarding the maintenance of pool lighting and filtration equipment, which are common sources of such hazards. As of now, the hotel management is cooperating with the police, while forensic experts examine the pool area to ascertain how the electrical current entered the water.

The incident has sparked widespread concerns regarding safety standards in luxury hospitality establishments across India, with families and travelers calling for a comprehensive safety audit of all aquatic facilities at such properties. The bodies of the deceased have been moved to the mortuary as officials coordinate with the respective embassies to facilitate the repatriation process.
