HYDERABAD: At a recent live concert in Delhi, the audience was spellbound by a hypnotic performance of the Telugu sensation Oo Antava Mawa from Pushpa. The real revelation came when the spotlight revealed the voice, Sri Lankan singer, rapper, and producer Yohani Diloka De Silva.
Her journey began on a quiet afternoon during the COVID-19 pandemic, when a Sri Lankan musician sat alone in her home studio, pouring her heart into a cover of a beloved song. With no label’s blessing and no expectation of applause, she unknowingly set the stage for a revolution in Sri Lankan music.
That song was Manike Mage Hithe, a cover that soared past 200 million YouTube views, captured the hearts of Bollywood’s elite, electrified reality TV from Mumbai to Dhaka, and transformed a 28-year-old from Colombo into the most internationally celebrated Sri Lankan singer of her era.
Yohani’s journey to global stardom defies convention. The daughter of a retired Major General, she attended Visakha Vidyalaya in Colombo, completed her A-levels in England, and earned degrees in logistics and accounting, a resume more suited to a boardroom than a concert stage.
But she could not stay away from music. When Yohani returned to Sri Lanka in March 2019, she joined Pettah Effect, a lively music label full of young artists. She became well known with a popular rap cover of Deviyange Bare, earning the nickname ‘Rap Princess of Sri Lanka.’ She also showed her skills as a singer, rapper, and producer through more team projects.

In May 2021, Yohani released her cover of Manike Mage Hithe, originally by Satheeshan Rathnayaka, produced by Chamath Sangeeth, and written by Dulan ARX. The internet took it by storm. In three months, views soared past 60 million, and by year’s end, over 200 million. Yohani became the first female Sri Lankan singer to surpass one million YouTube subscribers.
But the song’s rise was about more than numbers. It became a cultural bridge, resonating across India, Bangladesh, the Maldives, and the South Asian diaspora. Manike Mage Hithe echoed through talent shows, swept across social media, and even moved Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan to share his own tribute. Indian actor Siddharth Nigam’s viral TikTok video sent its popularity soaring even higher.
In October 2021, Yohani made her international debut in Hyderabad, India. She performed a lively concert with her band. She appeared on two of India’s top TV shows, Salman Khan’s Bigg Boss 15 and Ranveer Singh’s Big Picture. The Government of India honored her as the Indo-Ceylon Cultural Ambassador. This title recognizes how her music connects cultures across borders.
Her momentum showed no signs of slowing. She contributed to the official anthem of the ICC T20 Cricket World Cup 2026 in Sri Lanka. One of the most remarkable moments in Yohani’s journey arrived in October 2022, when a Hindi remake of her signature song, Manike, was featured in the Bollywood film Thank God, starring Ajay Devgn, Sidharth Malhotra, Rakul Preet Singh, and Canadian artist Nora Fatehi. It became the first Hindi song to ever weave Sinhala lyrics into its melody.
The song was made by Tanishk Bagchi and Chamath Sangeeth, with words by Rashmi Virag, Dulan ARX, and Mellow D. Yohani sang with Indian singers Jubin Nautiyal and Surya Raghunaathan, showing she is not just a guest in India, but a regular partner in the Hindi music world.
In April 2022, Yohani signed with T-Series, India’s music powerhouse and the world’s largest YouTube channel. This move placed her among Bollywood’s elite and opened up collaborations, from the Hindi single Tu Samane Aaye with Jubin Nautiyal to the multi-artist track Chaudhary with Rajasthani folk legend Mame Khan.
She also left her mark on Tamil and Telugu cinema, lending her voice to The Legend and to Harris Jayaraj’s composition for Dhamaka. Crossing languages and borders, Yohani has a gift for making any musical world feel like home.
Yohani’s ascent has faced challenges. During Sri Lanka’s economic crisis in 2022, she launched the ‘I Am for Sri Lanka’ foundation, raising USD 5,000 for the Red Cross to provide medical supplies and aid to those injured in protests.
In November 2022, she crossed one million followers on Instagram, becoming only the third Sri Lankan celebrity to reach that milestone after Piyumi Hansamali and Dinakshi Priyasad.
With a twelve-track debut Sinhala album on the horizon, collaborations with Guru Randhawa and Shreya Ghoshal in the works, and a discography spanning Sinhala, Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, and English, Yohani’s rise is only gathering speed.
