TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Singapore is listed as the country with the most powerful passport in the world. However, when it comes to cost, it is surpassed by Australia. Australian citizens must pay AUS 422 (US$302) or approximately Rp5 million to obtain a 10-year adult passport as of January 2026. This cost has increased by approximately AUS 10 compared to the same month last year. This makes Australia the country with the most expensive passport in the world.
Australia also increased passport fees last year. A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade explained that passport fees are indexed annually on January 1st according to the Consumer Price Index. This passport is claimed to have a high level of technological sophistication, supported by stringent anti-fraud measures.
Using the latest 2026 price data from government sources and the Henley Passport Index, British comparison site Compare the Market analyzed and ranked passports based on their cost and global travel power.
The Mexican passport ranks second in terms of cost at US$255 (approximately Rp4.3 million), followed by the American passport at US$208 (approximately Rp3.5 million), and the New Zealand passport at US$153 (approximately Rp2.6 million).
Singapore charges a passport application fee of US$55 (approximately Rp929,000) for adults. Despite its relatively low cost, Singapore maintains its top position as the world’s most powerful passport, with visa-free access to 193 destinations.
According to the Henley & Partners Passport Index, updated on March 11, the Australian passport ranks seventh as the world’s most powerful passport. Australian passport holders have visa-free access to 182 destinations.
Globally, the value of passports is generally declining. Compare the Market found that in 17 of the 25 countries studied, the number of countries passport holders can visit without a visa has decreased since 2025.
