Environment Agency issues update after Grantham river changed colour

Water below the White Bridge in Wyndham Park turned dull and grey

The Environment Agency has issued an update after a suspected pollution incident in Grantham.

RiverCare Grantham reported the incident to the Environment Agency and Anglian Water on Friday, April 10 after the water below the White Bridge in Wyndham Park appeared dull and grey.

As a precaution, the group advised dog owners to keep their pets out of the river and not let them paddle or drink out of it until further notice.

Regarding the incident, a spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “Following a careful assessment of the incident, we determined that the pollutant would naturally dissipate with minimal impact to the environment.

“We would like to thank those who reported the incident to us and would encourage anyone seeing suspected pollution to report it to us via our 24 hour hotline on 0800 807060 or visit ‘Report an environmental problem – GOV.UK’.”

Every year specialist officers at the Environment Agency respond to around 15,000 incidents, which could be anything from suspected pollution, waterways, fisheries or water resources incidents.

An Anglian Water spokesperson added: “We take such reports very seriously and our operational team did attend the location in Wyndham Park on Saturday.

“We carried out the relevant tests and did not detect any issues in the water course.”
