Fox News paused their coverage as President Donald Trump addressed the press on Thursday, as the conflict in the Middle East continues on its 13th day. The broadcaster’s senior White House correspondent, Peter Doocy, asked the US leader: “Have you been briefed about how many Iran sleeper cells there could be inside the US right now?” To which he responded: “I have been, and a lot of people came in through [Joe] Biden with his stupid open border.” The politician warned: “But we know where most of them are. We’ve got our eye on all of them, I think.”
A sleeper cell is a group of operatives who work undercover until activated in enemy territory. It can also refer to a spy network or terrorist group, posing a potential national risk across the United States. In his response, the 79-year-old lashed out, saying: “They came in through the open border policies of ‘sleepy’ Joe Biden.”
Trump then labelled the former US leader as “one of the worst, the worst president in the history of our country,” before addressing the Iran sleeper cells, adding: “And we’ve got our eyes on all of them.
“The war itself is being prosecuted at a level that nobody’s seen before; it’s pretty amazing to watch.”
Despite this warning, the president’s admission left viewers with more questions about their government’s objectives, as one asked: “If we ‘know where they are,’ why aren’t they behind bars?”
Another echoed: “If we know where they are, shouldn’t they go get them?” As a third asked: “How exactly can we have our ‘eye on all of them’ when we don’t even know how many came in … or WHO CAME IN?”
A fourth viewer fumed: “So he’s not going to arrest any of them. Sounds about right to me. What a joke.”
Trump was asked about this during the press conference and brushed off the retaliation fears, as he replied: “It’s being investigated, but you have a lot of things happening, and all we can do is take them as they come.”
