A 54-year-old man, known as YouTuber Salim Wastik, has been arrested for a kidnapping-murder case dating back to 1995 after changing his identity.
The Delhi Police Crime Branch apprehended a 54-year-old man in connection with a 31-year-old kidnapping and murder case. The individual, known as Salim Wastik, also referred to as Salim Ahmed, had been living under a false identity for over two decades before his recent arrest in Loni, Uttar Pradesh.
Salim Wastik was arrested following a tip-off that suggested a known figure in the community was actually a long-absconding criminal. Police confirmed his identity through old records, fingerprints, and photographs. Wastik had been evading authorities since failing to return after being granted interim bail by the Delhi High Court in 2000.
The case traces back to January 20, 1995, when 13-year-old Sandeep Bansal, the son of a businessman from Delhi, was kidnapped while heading to school. A ransom of ₹30,000 was demanded a day later, along with threats to involve the police if the family alerted authorities. Tragically, the boy was murdered, and his body was discovered in a drain in the Mustafabad area after investigations revealed crucial details.
Salim Wastik, a martial arts trainer at the victim’s school, was arrested along with an associate named Anil after confessing to the crime during interrogation. They were convicted in 1997 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
Although both were imprisoned, Wastik’s release on interim bail in 2000 allowed him to evade capture. Over the years, he constructed a new identity, initially faking his own death, and eventually became a noted social activist and YouTuber, known locally for his online presence.
Despite managing to evade law enforcement for 26 years, authorities traced his movements, which included relocating between Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, before settling in Loni, where he operated a women’s clothing store. According to police officials, he built a public profile on social media and was even in discussions for a film project based on his life, for which he had received an advance payment.
Salim Wastik’s arrest underscores the effectiveness of current investigative techniques and technologies that assisted law enforcement in apprehending him after such a long period of time. Following his capture, he was transferred to Tihar Jail.
The case highlights a larger narrative of how some individuals manage to elude justice by continuously changing their identities. Police officials emphasised that legal consequences are inevitable and cannot be avoided indefinitely, noting the persistent investigations that ultimately led to this breakthrough.
In a separate but related incident earlier this year, Wastik survived a stabbing attack linked to his controversial views on Islam and past religious affiliation. Investigators believe that this incident brought additional scrutiny to his background, facilitating renewed efforts to solve the kidnapping and murder case from 1995.
The police investigation further revealed that two suspects were shot in an encounter related to the attack on Wastik, illustrating the escalating tension surrounding his public persona.
As Salim Wastik now faces legal procedures following his arrest, authorities continue to affirm their commitment to addressing outstanding cases, no matter how much time has passed since the offenses were committed.
