Tottenham Hotspur have issued a statement regarding the injury Xavi Simons sustained against Wolves at the weekend, and the outlook is bleak for the attacking midfielder
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that Xavi Simons has ruptured his ACL.
The 23-year-old sustained the injury to his right knee during Spurs’ 1-0 win over Wolves at Molineux on Saturday afternoon while chasing a loose ball alongside Hugo Bueno.
Simons immediately fell to the turf, writhing in pain as medical assistants rushed over to provide treatment. The outlook appeared bleak when the attacking midfielder needed to be stretchered off the pitch.
And Spurs have now confirmed the worst, explaining that their talent will undergo surgery in the coming weeks.
The club wrote on Monday morning: “We can confirm that Xavi Simons has ruptured the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in his right knee;.
“The 23-year-old suffered the injury during the second half of our Premier League fixture at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday.
“Xavi will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and, following that, will then begin his rehabilitation with our medical team.

“Everyone at Tottenham Hotspur sends Xavi our love and support – we will be with him every step of the way.”
Elsewhere, Simons took to Instagram on Sunday evening to announce his heartbreak, as he potentially faces up to eight months out, meaning he will definitely be missing this summer’s World Cup with the Netherlands.
He wrote: “They say life can be cruel and today it feels that way. My season has come to an abrupt end and I’m just trying to process it.
“Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense. All I’ve wanted to do is fight for my team and now the ability to do that has been snatched away from me… along with the World Cup.
“Representing my country this summer…just gone. It’ll take time to find peace with this, but I’ll continue to be the best teammate I can be. I have no doubt that together we’ll win this fight.
“I’ll walk this path now, guided by faith, with strength, with resilience, with belief, as I count down the days to getting back out there.Be patient with me. TTP. COYS.”
The Dutchman’s injury is just the latest in what has been a nightmare campaign for the relegation-threatened club, with the Spurs squad ravaged by injuries.
Cristian Romero will be out for up to eight weeks through a tear in his knee, while Wilson Odobert is also on a lengthy road to recovery owing to an ACL issue of his own.
Dejan Kulusevski is yet to represent Spurs this season as he continues to recover from his own knee issue, sustained almost 12 months ago, while Ben Davies may have played his final game in the white of Tottenham, out of contract this summer and sidelined with an ankle fracture.
