Three families from the congregation of the Church of the Ascension, Kenton, hosted a memorable cultural evening on Saturday 25 April, inviting guests to explore Indian and Tamil traditions through Virunthombal – the art of hospitality.
Guests were welcomed at the church entrance with a beautifully arranged Kolam, a traditional floral display arranged on the ground.
“This vibrant welcome set the tone for the evening’s celebration,” said The Revd Malcolm Hall, Vicar at Church of the Ascension.
Inside, members of the congregation extended a heartfelt greeting to each guest, offering flowers, sugar candy, and a gentle sprinkling of rose water – symbolic gestures of warmth and goodwill.
The evening began with presentations from each of the host families, who shared personal stories of their journeys to the UK alongside reflections on their cultural heritage. At the heart of their talks was the meaning of Virunthombal, emphasising its role in fostering hospitality, and unity.
Following a Tamil worship song, guests gathered for a communal meal that embodied the evening’s themes of togetherness and Christ-centred fellowship. The menu, lovingly prepared by the hosts, showcased a range of traditional South Indian dishes, including Chicken 65, Masala Vadai, Biryani, Paneer Butter Masala, and Raita, followed by Sweet Kesari for dessert.
The shared meal provided an opportunity for all present to experience the richness of South Indian cuisine while deepening connections within the community.
The event highlighted the Church of the Ascension’s ongoing commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and strengthening bonds through faith, hospitality, and shared experience.
