The body was found on the border of Merseyside and Lancashire with it unclear at this stage which police force is investigating the death
A body was found on the border of Merseyside last night. It is understood the discovery was made in water near Foul Lane in Southport yesterday, April 29, with several people informing the ECHO of the incident.
When the ECHO initially approached Merseyside Police about the incident, we were told it fell under the jurisdiction of Lancashire Police given it occurred on the border of the two counties. When approached, Lancashire Police force told the ECHO it was being led by the force’s Merseyside counterparts.
Following several exchanges between the ECHO and both forces, Lancashire Police stated both the detective inspector for the area and its force incident manager confirmed it was Merseyside Police’s investigation.
Merseyside Police stated the file for the unnamed person had been handed to the Lancashire coroner’s office and directed the ECHO to the coroner’s office.
A spokesperson for the Lancashire Coroner’s Office told the ECHO they are not aware of the case in question.
It is also highly unusual for a coroner’s office to disclose any information regarding a death before a potential inquest.
In these cases, the ECHO approaches the press office for the police force responsible for investigating the incident and they often disclose information such as time they received a report, location and nature of the incident.
No information has been made available about the person involved or when they were found. It is unclear as to whether there is a live investigation into the death.
