The end date for extensive roadworks on a busy stretch of Stirling road are set to be extended even further due to complications with the sewer and sinkhole repair.
The area of Cornton Road up to Causewayhead Road has been closed after a large void was found underneath the carriageway during work to connect a property to the sewer.
It has caused significant travel disruption for drivers travelling into the city and to Bridge of Allan, with the flow of traffic also busy due to the location’s close proximity to HMP Stirling.
The repairs were initially set to last a total of eight weeks from the initial closure in early March.
But that date was pushed back to the end of May earlier this month – and has now been extended even further by Scottish Water chiefs to the end of June.
A five-metre deep excavation is required to repair a defective manhole, but over recent weeks the publicly owned utility has faced a number of unforeseen challenges.
The challenges have included the removal of a fire hydrant and the movement of a water main serving 1,000 properties and the prison, both of which have required careful planning and preparation.
A Scottish Water spokesperson said: “Only when the damaged manhole has been repaired and the area backfilled and reinstated can we turn our attention to the sinkhole itself.
“We still do not know how extensive it is and how much remedial work will be required to ensure the carriageway is not at risk from collapse and can be reopened.
“Emergency works are rarely straightforward, and multiple challenges can arise, but we are doing everything that we can to complete the work as quickly as possible.
“We are extremely grateful to the local community for their ongoing patience and support. We appreciate there will be growing frustrations, but we really are doing all that we can.”
