The award recognises young people aged 16–30 who are making an outstanding contribution to the High Peak’s environment, heritage, and arts
Buxton Civic Association (BCA) is delighted to announce that Leo Jay Mycock, aged 24, of Buxton, has been selected as the winner of the 2026 Clive Beattie Award. Leo will receive a commemorative trophy and a cash prize of £125.
Launched by BCA in early 2026, the new award recognises young people aged 16–30 who are making an outstanding contribution to the High Peak’s environment, heritage, and arts sectors through passion, creativity, and commitment to their community.
Leo was chosen by the BCA judging panel in recognition of his exceptional dedication to improving Buxton’s environment and inspiring civic pride. Saddened by the sight of litter spoiling the town’s parks, paths, and waterways, Leo began litter-picking in 2019 at the age of 17. Working initially on his own, with support from his family, he has since expanded his efforts year after year, covering large areas of the town and removing waste from public spaces and waterways.

In recent years, Leo has combined practical environmental action with creative public engagement through his popular “Buxton Barrow Man” video series on YouTube. Through these engaging films, he documents clean-up projects, explores Buxton’s heritage, and provides thoughtful, balanced commentary on local planning and development issues.
Leo is also well known to many residents and visitors as the driver of the miniature train in Pavilion Gardens, where he is recognised for his friendly and helpful manner. His care for the local environment extends to the park’s wildlife, where he regularly shares observations and raises awareness of animal welfare concerns.
The judging panel praised Leo not only for his commitment, but also for the positive and respectful tone he brings to public discussion online. In a digital world where debate can often become divisive, Leo has created spaces for civil and thoughtful conversation while encouraging others to take pride in their town.
Dave Green, BCA CEO said: “Leo embodies the spirit of the Clive Beattie Award. His quiet determination, creativity, and sustained commitment to improving Buxton’s environment make him a truly deserving winner. His work strongly aligns with Buxton Civic Association’s mission to protect and enhance the town’s heritage, landscapes, environment and public spaces for the benefit of everyone. Through practical action and positive community engagement, Leo is helping to shape the future of Buxton in exactly the way this award was created to celebrate.”
The Clive Beattie Award honours the memory of Clive John Beattie (1942–2023), former Chair of BCA, whose leadership helped transform the organisation and strengthen its work in heritage conservation, environmental stewardship, and community engagement. The Clive Beattie Award will return in 2027.
