Calling Nigeria’s current moment “pivotal,” the Catholic Priest acknowledged the country’s urgent need for energy to power homes, hospitals, schools, farms, industries, and businesses.
At the same time, he cautioned against repeating what he described as “the old pattern of development that benefits a few while burdening the poor.”
“We therefore call on government at all levels to formulate clear, consistent and just policies that protect affected communities, support small businesses, expand clean and affordable energy, create decent jobs, and ensure that no part of the country is left behind,” Fr. Banjo said.
He also appealed to investors, financial institutions, development partners, and the private sector to ensure renewable energy investments remain ethical and community-focused.
“The new energy economy must not reproduce old injustices in cleaner language,” he warned.

Fr. Banjo further noted that environmental responsibility belongs not only to governments and organizations but also to ordinary citizens.
He encouraged Nigerians to adopt environmentally responsible habits such as proper waste disposal, water conservation, recycling, tree planting, and maintaining clean public spaces.
“In these simple daily choices, we show whether we truly understand that creation is God’s gift and our common home,” he said.
The Catholic Priest also praised GreenFaith Africa, GreenFaith Nigeria, and the Kukah Centre for promoting climate justice, renewable energy, interfaith collaboration, and community-centered development.
“Care for creation is not a marginal concern, but a central moral responsibility,” he said.
Fr. Banjo assured the organizations of CSN’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at protecting the environment and promoting justice for vulnerable communities.
“The Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria stands ready to walk with you in this effort to protect creation, uplift the poor, and advance a truly just energy transition for our nation,” he said.
Fr. Banjo prayed for wisdom, courage, and unity as Nigeria seeks solutions to its environmental and energy challenges.
“May the Lord of all creation grant us wisdom, courage, and unity of purpose,” he implored.
