A driver has been given six points on his licence and told to pay over £1,000 after he was caught speeding through a roadworks area.
Daniel Bassett appeared at Truro Magistrates’ Court on May 6, after he was charged with speeding. Bassett pleaded not guilty but was convicted by the court.
The court heard that he was driving an Isuzu pick-up which was recorded speeding through a temporary roadwork speed limit at Threemilestone on June, 6, 2025.
Bassett, whose address was listed as Fordh Talgarrek in Truro, was clocked at 50mph – the normal limit along the road, but 20 miles over the temporary 30mph speed limit that was in place at the time.
The 45-year-old was handed six points on his licence and a fine of £440, and was told to pay costs of £400 plus a victim surcharge of £176.
Devon and Cornwall Police‘s roads safety team warned on Facebook: “Roadworks speed limits are legally enforceable when a temporary traffic regulation order (TTRO) is in force.
“They are put in place to protect both motorists and roadworkers. Please ensure that you respect these limits and don’t put the lives of roadworkers at risk.”
The team noted that the speed limit was only reduced on one side of the dual carriageway, meaning traffic on the other side was still allowed to reach 50mph.
It said the 50mph signage on the side with the reduced speed limit was “obscured or removed” during the temporary limit to avoid confusion.
