The Cornell School celebrates 10th anniversary!
Founded in 2016 by Oyendrila Kennedy, The Cornell School (TCS) is considered one of the best kept secrets in Cedar Mill. TCS is a private, certified family preschool for 32 children, located on three acres off Cornell road, near the French American school. The school is designed to offer experiential and hands-on learning where teachers nurture a sense of wonder, create intentional learning environments geared towards exploration, and encourage children to ask “why?” Critical thinking, conflict resolution, and problem solving are some of the building blocks of The Cornell School. The school, built primarily for working families, focuses on the whole child with emphasis on developing social-emotional skills and kindergarten readiness through an emerging curriculum that draws from the best practices of Reggio, STEM, Montessori and Play.

New Bottle Drop at Target store
Find a new Bottle Drop location on the west side of the Target store located at the NE corner of Saltzman and Cornell. This location only accepts bottles and cans in the green bags, and you need a Bottle Drop account to use the machines. You can also drop off blue bags for fundraising groups and they will get the credit.
You can sign up and redeem refunds at the kiosk inside the store or create your account online, and purchase bags at the Customer Service desk. Signing up for an account is free. A roll of 10 Green Bags costs $2, and there is a processing fee equal to 8% of the refund value of containers in each bag returned. Bag tag stickers are required for each bag and are free to print from any BottleDrop kiosk. Find more information on the Oregon Bottle Drop site. The Power of Produce (POP) booth invites children aged 3-11 to learn about food production, healthy eating choices, as well as pollinators, plant identification, and much more! After completing the POP activity, kids get two dollars to spend on fruits and vegetables at the market, encouraging the importance of buying fresh produce.
Cedar Mill Farmers Market is the perfect place to chat with farmers, learn where your food is coming from, and have a fun Saturday morning with the whole family! As the summer season continues, we cannot wait to see the exquisite fresh and local produce that our farmers graciously bring to the market.

Buying a Home? What to Know Before You Remodel
For many buyers, the purchase is just the beginning. The house has good bones, the location is right, but the kitchen is dated, the bathrooms haven’t been touched in twenty years, and the floors are three different types going in three different directions. Whole-home remodeling after a purchase is one of the most common projects we see, and one of the most misunderstood.
The biggest mistake new buyers make is starting too fast. It’s tempting to pull permits the week after closing, but a whole-home remodel deserves a planning window. Decisions made in the first thirty days tend to get revised in month three, and revisions mid-project cost real money. Before a single wall opens, it’s worth spending time with a contractor who can walk the home with you, identify what’s structural versus cosmetic, and help you sequence the work, so trades aren’t tripping over each other.
The second thing buyers underestimate is what’s behind the walls in older homes. Cedar Mill has a lot of housing stock from the 1960s through the 1980s. That era comes with its own set of considerations: electrical panels that weren’t designed for modern loads, plumbing that’s approaching the end of its serviceable life, and insulation that meets none of today’s standards. A good whole-home remodel addresses what you can see and what you can’t.

How CWS sets rates for your community
Each year, Clean Water Services (CWS) develops an annual budget and sets rates to support essential wastewater and stormwater services across Washington County. These decisions help ensure that our communities have the infrastructure and services we need to protect public health, reduce flooding, and keep our waterways clean. Any changes to rates for the upcoming fiscal year would take effect on July 1.

What Is a Money Market Account and Why Do You Need One?
Effective investment strategies divide investment funds over stocks, bonds and cash based on age, goals and risk tolerance. Keeping some funds “liquid” or in cash does not mean all of your cash savings needs to sit in a low-interest saving account or locked up in a CD. More flexible options are available in the market that will earn more interest while still allowing funds to be readily available. CDs are available for purchase in just about any amount, generally beginning with a minimum to open of around $500. Youth CDs, like the one at Sunset Credit Union, can be opened with just $100. The terms extend from one month to over five years and the interest rate usually increases as the length of time increases, until around the two-to-three-year mark. While CDs generally offer higher interest rates over savings or Money Market accounts, they come with a penalty for early withdrawal and do not allow any deposits or withdrawals. Those with longer amounts of time are largely speculative. You are on the positive end if the interest rates decline but if the interest rates increase, you will be locked in with the lower interest rate or risk the penalty for early withdrawal.
There is another option that bridges the gap between the low interest, easy access savings account and the higher interest, no access CD. It’s called a Money Market account. Generally speaking, these accounts operate much like a savings account but require a minimum balance and offer a tiered interest structure. The greater the account balance, the higher the interest. There are usually no restrictions on the number of deposits and withdrawals as long as you maintain the minimum balance. These accounts are great for those times when you aren’t using the funds immediately but will need some or all in the not-so-distant future. For example, saving for a down payment on a house or a car or some other major purchase or even to start a rainy day fund. This account is a great one to have in your investment portfolio.
The Money Market account at Sunset Credit Union requires a minimum balance of $2500, has no restrictions on the amount of deposits and withdrawals and the interest rate increases as your balance increases.
