A body has been pulled from the sea at Brighton beach close to where three sisters drowned in a triple tragedy just three weeks ago.
Police said the tragic discovery was made at around 6.40am on Wednesday after emergency services rushed to the scene following “concerns for a man in the water”. The man was recovered from the sea near Madeira Drive in the city, police said.
It comes three weeks after sisters Jane Adetoro, 36, Christina Walters, 32, and Rebecca Walters, 31, were tragically pulled from the water on May 13 just half a mile away in the Black Rock area.
And last week, another man’s body was found on the nearby Rottingdean beach in Brighton. Emergency services rushed to the scene this morning (Wednesday) to reports that a man was in difficulty in the water.
The man was pulled from the water but tragically pronounced dead at the scene. Pictures show a sizable emergency response, including police, coastguard and an on-call coroners officer attended the scene.
A spokesman for Sussex Police said: “At around 6.40am today, emergency services attended Brighton beach, near to Sea Lanes in Madeira Drive, after concerns were raised for a man in the water.
“The body of a man was recovered from the sea, and sadly, he was pronounced deceased at the scene. Attempts to identify the man and notify his next of kin remain ongoing.
“Officers will continue carrying out enquiries in the area, and an increased police presence is expected at this time.”
The beach tragedy comes three weeks after the deaths of sisters Jane, Christina and Rebecca shocked the nation. Their heartbroken father identified his children 16 years after their mum Janice, 43, was also found drowned after disappearing in Birmingham.
An inquest opening heard how Rebecca’s body washed up on the shore while Christina and Jane were found in the water by the RNLI. The provisional cause of death for the women is yet to be determined.
Senior coroner Penelope Schofield confirmed police believe there is no third party involvement in the sisters’ deaths. She added: “I hope this will stop the social media speculation around the circumstances of their deaths.”
Joseph, the sisters’ dad, said “no words can truly describe the pain” of losing his family after the triple tragedy.
He also described the girls as his “joy and strength” in a moving tribute after they died.
