A police investigation has been launched after a man suffered stab wounds to his leg during a disturbance in Newcastle. Emergency services descended on Springfield Road in Blakelaw on Friday night after an incident involving a group of men.

Police say one man sustained non-life threatening stab injuries and a teenage boy suffered minor injuries to his back after being assaulted shortly before 10pm. The assault was said to have been carried out by the occupants of a van that had crashed into the fence of a property.

An investigation has since been launched and officers are now hunting the suspects. A police cordon remained in place on the street throughout Saturday.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “Shortly after 9.50pm on Friday (June 5), we received a report of a disturbance on Springfield Road in Blakelaw, Newcastle. Emergency services attended where it was reported a vehicle had collided with the fence of a residential property on the street, causing damage.

“A number of occupants from the van have then proceeded to assault two males outside of the address, before driving away from the scene. One of the male victims – aged in his 20s – was taken to hospital with a non-life threatening injury to his leg consistent with having been caused by a bladed article.

“He remains in a stable condition. The other male victim – aged in his late teens – sustained minor injuries to his ankle and back. An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the report, and to locate those involved. Officers remain in the area to carry out enquiries and offer reassurance to the public.
