CANTIKA.COM, Jakarta – Seafood is a favorite food choice for many people. But, did you know that the number of marine animals is decreasing? Research even suggests that marine animals may become extinct by 2048. Therefore, it is important for all of us to preserve the sustainability of marine animals.
This year, on World Ocean Day, IKEA and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) held a Molecular Gastronomy Experience at IKEA Alam Sutera. Chef Andrian demonstrated cooking using MSC products available at IKEA.
Preserving the Marine Ecosystem to Maintain Seafood Quality
This cooking demonstration was opened by Chef Andrian with a traditional Naniura dish cooked using MSC-certified salmon from IKEA. The dish was served with thinly fried tempe as mini cups.
While cooking, Chef Andrian also explained his perspective on seafood sustainability. “As a chef, it is important for us to be involved in maintaining sustainability. We, as cooks, are responsible for our dishes,” he said during the cooking demo at IKEA Alam Sutera, Tangerang on June 9, 2026.
He also emphasized the importance of using quality ingredients when cooking. “If the sea is not preserved, the quality of the food cannot be maintained,” he said, once again emphasizing the importance of preserving the marine ecosystem for public health.
International Standard Seafood Products from Maluku Fishermen
Hirmen Syofyanto, MSC Program Director present at the event, emphasized the importance of the public knowing about the increasing practice of overfishing, i.e., when fish are caught faster than the natural ability to reproduce. If left unchecked, marine animals will become extinct, marine ecosystems will be damaged, and will have a negative impact on human life.
To address this issue, MSC aims to ensure sustainable products. This includes ensuring that the capture process does not harm the environment, ensuring that natural resources are maintained, and managing products in compliance with regulations.
“There are MSC products from fishermen in the United States, but there are also local tuna from fishermen in Maluku. This shows that Maluku fishermen have the same production quality as US fishermen,” said Hirmen.
Ahmad Alhamid, IKEA Indonesia’s Sustainability Business Partner, explained that through this program, affordable supplies will increase. This is because a preserved and stable population will also generate stable income for the fishermen. Consumers can also easily identify sustainable products through the blue MSC sticker on the packaging.
Currently, IKEA has provided various MSC products in the Swedish Food Market. IKEA’s restaurant can also be an option for those who want to directly experience the delicious MSC products. There are also new menu items at IKEA’s restaurant, such as Baked Salmon with Creamy Garlic Sauce and Beef Wallenbergare with Mashed Potato, Lingonberry, and Gravy.
Let’s preserve the sea so that in the future, we can still enjoy delicious seafood! Is the seafood you consume already MSC-labeled?
