A man jailed for running over and killing a “gentle and loving soul” who was out walking his dog near his home could be released early, heaping more misery and devastation on a grieving family.
On the evening of December 23, 2024, dad-of-two Aaron Jones was walking in the village of Llanpumsaint in Carmarthenshire when he was struck by a Vauxhall Crossland driven by Daniel Wyke who was working as a delivery driver for a Carmarthen-based Chinese takeaway at the time.
Mr Jones, who was 38, was left to die and later found lying on the other side of a stone wall. His dog was seen walking around the village on his own still attached to his lead.
Wyke, of Llanybri, drove away from the scene without reporting the crash and was tracked down and arrested by police the following day on Christmas Eve 2024.
Earlier this year he was sentenced to four and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.
Just a few months on from that sentencing hearing concerns have been raised that Wyke could be released early due to the Sentencing Act 2026 – an Act of Parliament that reforms criminal sentencing, bail frameworks, and prison release procedures in England and Wales which is primarily aimed at reducing prison overcrowding.
Mr Jones’ widow Lisa Jones recently received a letter from the Ministry of Justice indicating Wyke may fall under provisions introduced by the new act. However she and her family will have to wait around two months before finding out if the man who killed Mr Jones will be allowed to leave prison early.
