Good Morning Britain’s Susanna Reid confirms show future after ITV ‘breaking news’

The hosts of Good Morning Britain announced “breaking news” about ITV during the latest episode.

Susanna Reid and Ed Balls returned to the breakfast programme on Monday (July 6) to deliver the latest headlines from across the UK and around the world.

They notably celebrated England’s World Cup win against Mexico, as well as discussing Prince Harry’s upcoming visit to the UK.

That’s not all, as Sean Fletcher announced some “breaking news” about ITV. He said: “We’ve got some breaking news to bring you. ITV has announced that it’s agreed to sell its TV and streaming services to Sky for £1.6 billion.

“The deal will create the largest commercial broadcaster [that’s] set to rival streaming platforms like Amazon Prime and Netflix. We’ll have more details later on in the show.”

While discussing the news with Richard Arnold later in the show, Susanna confirmed GMB’s future amid ITV’s changing landscape.

“We have this breaking news this morning. Sky reaching a £1.6 billion deal to buy ITV’s television and streaming services,” she shared.

Entertainment reporter Richard added: “All the t’s need to be crossed and the i’s need to be dotted. But the important thing for you guys watching at home is it’s business as normal. All your favourites – Corrie, Emmerdale, the faces you wake up to every morning on Good Morning Britain – nothing’s going to change.”

Susanna then confirmed: “We’re going nowhere,” before Richard said: “More importantly for you guys at home, as well, it’s free to air on ITV and ITVX moving forward. So, nothing will change.

“It will create the UK’s largest commercial broadcaster, and Sean will have more on that at 8 o’clock.”

The sale is one of the biggest takeovers in British media history with American-owned Comcast – which owns Sky – having started takeover talks in November last year.

Sky chief executive Dana Strong called it “a defining moment for British media”.

“The UK media market is undergoing a profound and rapid transformation, and as competition for audiences intensifies, scale matters more than ever in order to compete with global streaming giants and YouTube in the UK,” Sky Group said in a statement.

“Viewers will continue to enjoy the shows they know and love, such as Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Love Island, I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, This Morning, Loose Women, Lorraine and News at Ten – alongside major live sporting events.”
