Boleto began by reading out Trump’s recent statement on Truth Social, telling viewers: “The president of the United States posted on Truth Social, literally in the last minute. He’s saying, ‘I’m pleased to report that the United States of America and the country of Iran have, over the last few days, had very good and productive conversations regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East.
“‘Based on the tender and tone of these in depth detail and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions.'”
The presenter was joined in the studio with Sky News’ Middle East commentator Tara Kangarlou, who was pressed on how she thinks the Iranian people will be feeling after seeing Trump’s statement.
She responded: “I think their shock will continue because for them, Donald Trump promised help and regime change so many of them, who have been looking forward to that, they would wonder if this regime stays, what would their life look like?
“Would it be further repressed because as history has shown, the government will become more repressive and brutal toward any form of descent. That is one concern.”
Kangarlou added: “I think the questions continue to linger in the minds of ordinary Iranians who are caught in between a repressive regime and the aggression of foreign powers that, for them, is ambiguous.”
Despite Trump’s positive conversations with members of the Iranian government, Kangarlou pointed out that no one knows what the true outcome will be.
She explained that the Iranian people may be feeling like they’ve been left behind, highlighting that Trump’s statement has come after two major attacks near nuclear sites in Iran and Israel.
Kangarlou went on: “I think that was part of Donald Trump’s calculus, that this will move the war toward unchartered territory.”
During a call last night, both Trump and Prime Minister Keir Starmer agreed that reopening the Strait of Hormuz is “essential to resume global shipping”.
