South East Patriots had planned an anti-immigration march in Brighton on August 8, but announced on Instagram that it would not go ahead due to “safety concerns.”
The group had been planning to “muster” on Hove Lawns before marching to “stop the boats” and “send them home.”
In an Instagram post on July 15, the group said: “Due to safety concerns for fellow patriots plus the potential restrictions put in place by the police, we have taken the decision to cancel our event ONLY THIS TIME!
“The restrictions were likely to short our march which would have caused not moving and possibly being kettled in again which is not what we want!
“Safety matters.
“You saw what happened last time we don’t want that to happen we want to be able to march but those potential restrictions would cause a danger.
“We will arrange another date.”
The decision follows their last march in Brighton on June 13, which began near Brighton railway station around midday and attracted about 300 supporters.
An estimated 4,000 counter-protesters turned out under the Carnival Against Fascism banner to line Trafalgar Road and surrounding streets.
The two groups came into contact and tensions escalated, prompting a heavy police response.
Eight people were arrested, including one for assaulting a police officer, and others for breach of the peace, possession of a pyrotechnic, and other public order offences.
