An out-of-hours opticians clinic in York is helping break down barriers to vital healthcare.
Specsavers Acomb delivered a free eye and hearing care clinic for young adults experiencing homelessness, supporting individuals staying at the Howe Hill hostel through the City of York’s A Bed Ahead scheme.
Three optometrists and two audiologists provided sight tests, Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) scans, and hearing checks.
Almost half of those seen were given new glasses.
Michael Russell, project lead at York City Council’s A Bed Ahead scheme, said: “The clinic hosted by the team at Specsavers for young people currently staying at Howe Hill hostel offered visitors a safe, supportive, and positive environment where they could access the healthcare they deserve.
“Many of the individuals we support who have experienced or are actively experiencing homelessness often go long periods without the urgent care they need because it is an expense many cannot afford.
“As a result, their health often falls down the list of priorities.
“This service alleviates that strain, enabling young people to prioritise their wellbeing and remove barriers to access.
“Hopefully, it will open doors and connect them with further services that can improve their quality of life and self-esteem.”
Adjacent company Savers Health & Beauty also donated essential toiletries.
