Good Morning Britain issued an urgent warning to viewers as breaking news emerged on Thursday, 30 July, after a wildfire on the Suffolk coast.
Presenters Kate Garraway and Adil Ray fronted the programme, with Charlotte Hawkins on hand to deliver the latest news updates.
The show displayed a “Breaking News” banner as Charlotte provided viewers with a significant update regarding a devastating wildfire sweeping across Suffolk on Dunwich Heath.
A major incident was formally declared after a substantial wildfire erupted across heathland along the Suffolk coast, forcing residents and a nearby caravan park to be evacuated.
Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that approximately 90 firefighters were deployed to battle the blaze at its peak, stating they had been “working incredibly hard in arduous conditions”.
The fire ignited on Wednesday afternoon, with authorities urging local residents to keep their distance and keep windows and doors shut.
The major incident warning has been issued due to the “size and complexity” of the blaze and shifting wind conditions.
Officials said the heathland area on fire is about the size of 14 football pitches, according to the BBC.
They’ve also confirmed a nearby nuclear site is not at risk, with officials stating: “At this time there is no current risk to Sizewell B, due to the distance from the fire and the direction it is travelling (easterly).
“However, this is a live and dynamic situation and as a result any further updates will be shared accordingly.”
No injuries have currently been reported, but the East of England Ambulance Service are on hand and people have been evacuated safely.
Addressing the updates on Good Morning Britain, Kate told viewers: “A major incident has been declared and people warned to stay away from a huge wildfire,” reports the Mirror.
“Around 90 firefighters are working to tackle the large and complex, they say, fire in Suffolk.
“It comes as half of England and Wales are now officially in drought.”
Following further headlines from Adil, Kate announced: “We’re going to take you straight to Charlotte now with that breaking news.”
Charlotte told viewers: “In breaking news this morning, homes have been evacuated, and public are being told to stay away as emergency services continue to tackle a wildfire in Suffolk.
“Elsewhere the dry weather has taken a toll on water supplies, drought has been declared across half of England.”
