Indian weightlifters finished the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow with eight medals, with Lovepreet Singh capping off the campaign with a silver in the men’s +110kg weightlifting category on Thursday.
On the final day of Glasgow 2026 weightlifting competitions at the SEC Armadillo, Lovepreet, who had won bronze in the 109kg category at Birmingham 2022, lifted 388kg (176kg snatch + 212kg clean and jerk) to claim his second Commonwealth Games medal.
The 28-year-old Lovepreet lost out on the gold by a single kilogramme with David Liti of New Zealand topping the podium with a Games record mark of 389kg (166kg+223kg).
Lovepreet Singh looked on course for the top step after the snatch section. After starting with 168kg, he improved his mark to 173kg and then 176 kg – a new Games record snatch – to take a whopping 10kg lead into the clean and jerk portion.
David Liti, however, excelled here with lifts of 207kg and then a massive 223kg to erase the deficit.
Lovepreet successfully lifted 205kg and 212kg with his first two attempts but could not clear 217kg with his final attempt, handing the gold to Liti, who was the heavyweight men’s champion at Gold Coast 2018 and a silver medallist at Birmingham 2022.
Andrew Griffiths of England took the bronze with a total of 356kg.
Earlier in the day, Martina Devi Maibam finished fifth in the women’s +86kg division with a total lift of 245kg (105kg snatch+140kg clean and jerk).
The Indian lifter looked headed towards an early exit as she failed with her first two snatch attempts at 103kg. However, she stayed alive in the competition by successfully hoisting 105kg with her final attempt.
On Wednesday, Sanjana had failed to rank in the women’s 77kg division after failing to log a single successful snatch attempt.
Martina was successful with her first clean and jerk attempt, lifting 140kg. However, she failed with 144kg and 146kg in her final two attempts. The Indian could have secured a bronze had she successfully lifted 146kg in her final try.
England’s Emily Campbell clinched the title with a Commonwealth Games record total lift of 278kg (115kg+163kg).
Malaysia’s Siti Aqilah Farhana Draman claimed the silver medal with a combined lift of 253kg (113kg + 140kg), while Canada’s Etta Mae Love completed the podium with bronze after lifting a total of 250kg (106kg + 144kg).
Courtesy of Lovepreet’s medal, Indian lifters finished CWG 2026 with eight medals – one gold, six silver and one bronze.
Mirabai Chanu accounted for the gold, while Harjinder Kaur, Valluri Ajaya Babu, Rishikanta Singh, Raja Muthupandi and Gyaneshwari Yadav won the other five silver medals. Bindyarani Devi won the bronze.
Only Nirupama Devi, Sanjana and Martina failed to podium from the Indian lifting contingent at Glasgow 2026.
