Mumbai, India – In a candid revelation, veteran actor Govinda has shed light on a crucial period in Salman Khan’s early career, recalling a profound conversation that predated their immensely successful 2007 collaboration, ‘Partner’. Govinda detailed how he offered vital personal and professional guidance to a then-distressed Salman, a testament to their enduring friendship of over four decades.

Speaking to ANI, Govinda recounted the state of mind Salman was in before the filming of ‘Partner’. “Salman was going through a lot of pain and distress. And when someone is troubled by himself, whether it is because of love, hopes, or expectations, there is no one else who can really cure that. So, he had become very withdrawn,” Govinda shared.

A Journey Inward: The Advice That Resonated

Recognizing Salman’s emotional struggle, Govinda felt compelled to intervene. He described a heart-to-heart discussion where he urged Salman to shift his focus from external factors to internal introspection. “I thought I should introduce him to satya (truth), so we sat together and had a drink. While we were drinking, I told him, ‘Salman, you’ve looked outward enough. Now look within yourself’,” he disclosed.

To illustrate his point, Govinda drew a parallel with his own physical transformation at the time. Having recently exited politics, Govinda revealed he was at a personal crossroads, weighing 114 kilos. He used this as an example of taking charge of one’s narrative.

“At that time, I weighed 114 kilos. It was the time when I had just come out of politics. I told him, ‘By the time I lose weight, I’ll already be a character actor, right? I’ll continue doing the kind of roles I was doing in Partner, I was doing comedy’. I told him, ‘You are the hero, but you don’t look like one right now. You look unhappy, you look sad. Come out of this’,” Govinda added, emphasizing the importance of appearance matching ambition for a leading man.

Fitness, Confidence, and a Hero’s Aura

Beyond emotional introspection, Govinda also strongly advocated for a renewed commitment to physical fitness. He impressed upon Salman the transformative power of regular exercise, suggesting that it could be the key to regaining both confidence and a commanding screen presence. He even invoked the legendary Dharmendra as an aspirational figure.

“I said, ‘Exercise for two or three hours a day. Look at Dharmendra. You are the only hero, after Dharmendra, who has been blessed by God with parents, siblings, a good face and a great personality. You are the only guy who could carry that kind of aura, the kind that makes people look at you and say, ‘That’s a hero’,” Govinda recalled, painting a vivid picture of the iconic stature he envisioned for Salman.

According to Govinda, Salman took these words to heart, marking a turning point in his career trajectory. The subsequent years saw Salman’s rise to unprecedented superstardom, a journey Govinda had predicted.

“He did it. He could do it, and that’s a blessing. I told him that he would rule for 10 years and he did,” Govinda concluded, reflecting on the realization of his foresight.

‘Partner’ and Beyond: A Friendship Forged in Trust

The advice culminated in their successful on-screen collaboration in David Dhawan’s ‘Partner’, which released in 2007. The comedy, also starring Lara Dutta and Katrina Kaif, was a commercial hit and remains a cherished film for fans of both actors. This anecdote not only highlights Govinda’s unwavering support but also underscores the deep, personal bond that exists between these two stalwarts of Indian cinema, showcasing how crucial mentorship can be in an industry often perceived as cutthroat.
