Continental Country Club has served as an important gathering spot for decades.
The Continental Country Club enjoys an auspicious location in a high-desert ponderosa pine setting, close to downtown Flagstaff and nestled below Mount Elden.
This prominent family-oriented facility and residential community opened in 1958 and featured a 9-hole championship golf course designed by renowned architect Bob E. Baldrock. It was expanded to 18 holes in 1966 and named Continental Country Club in 1971.
A variety of memberships are available to both residents and non-residents who pay a social membership fee to support the club’s comprehensive amenities, which include a fitness center with modern equipment, pickleball and tennis courts and swimming pools. Also on the premises is Oakmont, a popular neighborhood restaurant known for its creative entrees and spectacular view.
Today, the club continues to serve as a community hub.
An Early Planned Community
“Continental Country Club was developed as part of one of Flagstaff’s early planned residential communities,” said Assistant General Manager Sean David. “Its mission was to create a place where residents could enjoy recreation, community connection and the beauty of Northern Arizona.”
Top Achievements
David detailed the club’s three top achievements: “Creating a strong community gathering place in East Flagstaff, maintaining quality golf and recreational amenities, and continuing to evolve with new programs and events while honoring the club’s traditions.”
Core Values
Through the years, the club’s core values have guided the operation. They include “community, recreation, quality service and creating a welcoming environment where residents and visitors can connect and enjoy an active lifestyle,” David said.
Shifts Impacting the Business
As the needs of the community have changed, so have the amenities provided by the club.
“The club has expanded beyond golf to include amenities like pickleball, tennis, fitness and community events to meet the changing interests of members and residents,” David noted.
Greatest Challenges
Balancing facility improvements and operational costs, while continuing to provide affordable access and amenities for the community, have been some of the greatest challenges, David said.
Looking Ahead
As the country club plans for decades to come, David says continued growth as a premier recreation and community destination in Flagstaff is the main focus, through facility improvements, new programs and strong community engagement.
The Reason for Long-Term Success
David cites “a strong sense of community” and the ability to bring neighbors, families and friends together through recreation and shared experiences as reasons why Continental Country Club has been and continues to be an important part of Flagstaff. FBN
