Hey Subscribers,
Strolling around the team buses at Ronde van Brugge this morning, I was drawn to the Alpecin-Premier Tech paddock, where on first inspection, there appeared to be some differences between the bikes on show. A handful of riders were on the all-conquering Aeroad, but there was also a grey machine on show.
Upon closer inspection, it appears to be an unreleased Canyon Endurance CFR. There had been rumours and reports of a new Aeroad coming, but those rumours appear wide of the mark, as our examination suggests Canyon has been working on a significant update to the Endurance CFR.

The bike I took photos of is Florian Sénéchal’s, and he’s running the new frameset with the existing cockpit setup. Another rider, in the images below, is racing on the new-look bars that Mathieu van der Poel recently teased on Instagram, and the new frame set.
Anyway, I pinged the images to resident tech expert Andy Turner, and he’s turned them into this in-depth, exclusive story!

Looking at the frame first, it’s very reminiscent of a Canyon Aeroad, but in fact, it’s believed to be a heavily updated Canyon Endurance CFR for both Movistar and Alpecin-Premier Tech. In recent years, endurance race bikes for cobbled classics have gone out of fashion as tyre clearances and widths have increased. This, however, looks like a return to more endurance frames being used for cobbled races.
At the front, this takes many features from the Aeroad frame, while the seat post is deep and bladed, as on the Aeroad frame. But things diverge as we move down the bike. The downtube features a wide flaring to better shield the bottle and help it become part of the effective aerofoil, and make for a longer virtual tube shape. Additionally, the junction between the seat tube and the seat stays has been heavily updated.
