For 63 years, KAFF Radio has been serving the community.
There’s a renewed sense of urgency inside KAFF Radio on West Route 66 as team members pack, purge and preserve decades of broadcast history ahead of a move to East Butler Avenue next month. It will mark just the third location for the station since its first broadcast in 1963.
The Founding Story
When KAFF AM 930 first hit the airwaves, Flagstaff was a growing mountain town. Founders Guy and Ann Christian brought industry experience and a vision to deliver quality programming to the region.
“I was not fortunate enough to meet Guy Christian prior to his passing, but his passion for supporting our community is legendary in the business,” said Business Manager Heather Swartz-Levin.
The station is now owned by Roger Anderson, who purchased it in 2014 from the Christian estate. Today, KAFF remains family-owned and operated by Roger and his son, Steve.
Top Achievements
KAFF’s growth stands as one of its greatest accomplishments.
“Over the years, this company has expanded from a single AM radio station to a significant group of radio, digital stations and news and sports departments,” said Swartz-Levin.
The network now includes eight formats: 92.9 KAFF, 93.9 The Mountain, Hits 106, The Mountain2.0, Arizona Hope, Magic 99.1, Fun Oldies and 930/93.5 KAFF AM.
The station also launched KAFF Cares, a community initiative supporting local causes and nonprofits.
Core Values
KAFF is rooted in community connection. “We are passionate about creating stations that bring listeners together through local news, events and music,” said Swartz-Levin. “We are also committed to embracing the next generation of broadcasters through internships and journalistic opportunities.”
Shifts Impacting the Business
The company is expanding its digital footprint. “We are highly focused on utilizing our assets to incorporate more digital marketing opportunities,” she said.
Partnerships with iHeartRadio and other streaming platforms are extending reach beyond Northern Arizona. The new facility will also support expanded offerings, including podcasts.
Greatest Challenges
Adapting to digital platforms while demonstrating the increased value to advertisers is a key challenge. “Radio, when paired with digital platforms, delivers a far greater impact than social media alone,” said Swartz-Levin.
Looking Ahead
KAFF plans to embrace emerging technologies while continuing to serve the community and local listeners.
“Our main goal is to remain a leader in shaping the future of radio,” she said.
The Reason for Long-Term Success
“Our shared love of radio, our appreciation for our clients and commitment to our community are why we’re here.” FBN
