A man at the scene appeared to spit at police before throwing a bottle
A man has been arrested on a string of suspected crimes, including false imprisonment, following a stand-off in Newton-le-Willows last night. Police, fire and ambulance services were called to The Avenue at around 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 1, following reports of a male acting erratically.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing around 10 police cars on Crow Lane East, at the junction of The Avenue, with a cordon in place. A police dog unit was also at the scene.
In a video shared with the ECHO, armed police could be seen with shields and pointing what appeared to be a gun at a house. Officers could be heard saying “we’re here to help you” and “stay calm”. They added: “Come to the door and bring nothing with you.”
ECHO reporter Emily Carubia witnessed a man leaning out the top window of a house, with armed police standing below.
The man appeared to spit at officers before throwing a bottle which smashed. He later closed the window.
An officer at the scene said the incident would be “ongoing for some time”, as negotiations continued.
A cordon was put in place as police attempted to speak with the man.
This morning, April 2, Merseyside Police confirmed a 42-year-old man has been arrested following the incident.
A spokesman said: “Emergency services were called to a property on The Avenue at 7.30pm following reports of a male acting erratically.
“Officers attended to speak to the man and he was eventually detained and arrested on suspicion of false imprisonment, common assault, assault by beating of an emergency worker and affray.
“The man is currently in custody.”
