The upcoming release of Dhurandhar 2 is poised to become a watershed moment for the Hindi film industry, with trade estimates projecting unprecedented box office performance and a broader structural impact on filmmaking trends.
Slated for a massive release across more than 8,000 screens, the sequel is expected to generate a lifetime net domestic collection in the range of Rs 1,200–1,300 crore, said Karan Taurani, executive vice president at Elara Capital.
Combined with its predecessor, the Dhurandhar franchise could surpass Rs 1,500 crore in net domestic earnings—potentially overtaking benchmark franchise performers like Baahubali: The Conclusion and Pushpa: The Rise in cumulative domestic collections. If achieved, this would mark the first time a Hindi-language franchise reaches such a scale.
“Early indicators point to strong audience demand. Advance bookings for Dhurandhar 2 are already trending above Rs 30 crore. The first installment had opened at Rs 30–35 crore on its debut day before scaling up through word-of-mouth. With the advantage of franchise recall, the sequel is now expected to register a Day 1 opening in the Rs 100–110 crore range, placing it among the biggest opening-day performers in Indian cinema history,” Taurani said.
The broader Hindi box office is also entering what Taurani described as a “peak cycle.” Net domestic collections are projected to reach Rs 4,900–5,000 crore in FY26, compared to Rs 4,000–4,500 crore in pre-pandemic years and around Rs 4,500 crore in FY24. This indicates a 20–25% growth over pre-covid levels, driven largely by big-ticket releases.
The rise of Dhurandhar 2 could also signal a shift in industry dynamics. In recent years, blockbuster success has been dominated by regional-language films such as KGF: Chapter 2, Pushpa: The Rise, Kantara, and RRR. A strong showing by the Dhurandhar franchise may help Hindi cinema regain market share, particularly through franchise-led content strategies.
As the film gears up for release, all eyes are on whether Dhurandhar 2 can not only meet lofty expectations but also redefine the commercial ceiling for Hindi cinema.
