Presenter Katherine Forster interviewed the politician as the breaking news banner flashed across the screen. She said: “You mentioned Donald Trump and Iran. On Monday, the US President said that the war was ‘very complete’ and there’s been a lot of bombing since then.” She then asked: “Do you think that the American President knows what he is doing?” Mr Davey very bluntly replied: “No.” He elaborated: “I am really worried that this American President is out of control.” He went on to admit that he says that “with sadness” as the Americans have “always been close allies of the UK.” Mr Davey added: “But under the control of Donald Trump, they have become a very unreliable ally, both in the economy and on foreign policy.”
The politician claimed that it was “good news” that the UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is “starting to stand up to Trump” but showed concern in case it “isn’t followed through”.
Mr Davey also worried about the impact that the Iran war will have on people, with costs going up on things such as petrol prices and energy bills.
He claimed: “This is a disaster… The government has got to get its act together to show that it will support people who are struggling.”
Ms Forster pointed out that “we as a nation are on Donald Trump’s naughty step” before asking whether or not Starmer has “got it right”.
“Does it matter that Donald Trump is cross with us?” she asked. Mr Davey replied to say that Britain needs to “stand up to him” and “put Britain’s interests first”.
