They confirmed that the Prime Minister will be travelling to the Middle East. It comes after US President Donald Trump announced he had called off plans to strike Iran, less than one day after threatening an end to civilisation. He said there will be a ceasefire between the US and Iran as long as the Strait of Hormuz is reopened.
The presenters were joined by political correspondent Louisa James, who said the news had been confirmed in the last few minutes.
She explained: “We’ve had confirmation in the last few minutes that the Prime Minister is going to travel to the Middle East later this morning. They say he will meet leaders of countries who have been on the front line, will set out his full support for the newly agreed ceasefire.
“He will reiterate unwavering UK support and need for a long-term diplomatic resolution. They will also hold talks on the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.”
Sir Keir said he welcomes the ceasefire agreement reached overnight, which he believes will bring a moment of relief to the region and the rest of the world.
Louisa acknowledged the likely “sighs of relief” from Downing Street when the news broke overnight because “Donald Trump following through with his threat to escalate conflict may have dramatically escalated the effects we’ve felt around the world”.
Louisa added: “The key point there is the promise that the Strait of Hormuz will reopen, getting oil and gas shipping moving again. Already, oil prices have dropped in response to that.
“But the question is what’s going to happen in those upcoming peace talks, especially what is going to happen at the end of those two weeks. As the Prime Minister heads to the Middle East this morning, the stakes remain incredibly high.”
