India study points to Fairtrade organic cotton benefits

BREMEN – Non-profit organisation Fairtrade has released a new study which it claims shows that Fairtrade-certified organic cotton production in India is associated with significantly lower greenhouse gas emissions and improved economic outcomes for farmers.

The research, which assessed 516 cotton farmers in India and was presented at this week’s International Cotton Conference in Bremen, also found no evidence of deforestation within the farm boundaries examined.
