New Delhi expresses deep distress over recent bombings in Lebanon resulting in significant civilian casualties, highlighting the importance of international law.
India has voiced serious concern regarding the alarming number of civilian deaths in Lebanon amidst ongoing military actions. In a statement issued on Friday, the Indian government referred to the recent bombings that have taken place over the past month, which have been attributed to Israeli forces. This period of conflict has led to substantial loss of life and has raised fears about the protection of civilians in the region.
The situation escalated dramatically on Wednesday, when a single day of bombardment resulted in the deaths of 303 individuals. These acts of violence further destabilise a fragile ceasefire agreement purportedly involving Iran and the United States. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs, represented by spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, expressed its apprehension during a media briefing. Jaiswal highlighted the need to respect international law and preserve the sovereignty of nations, stressing that civilians must be safeguarded as a top priority.
According to data reported by the Lebanese health authorities, the ongoing military operations have resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,800 individuals, along with injuries to over 5,873 others. Additionally, the Indian government revealed that over 1.1 million people have been displaced from their homes as a direct consequence of the military incursions and bombings carried out by Israel.
In the context of its close involvement with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), India has a vested interest in the peace and stability of the region. Jaiswal remarked on the disturbing trajectory of events, signalling India’s deepening concern over the humanitarian impacts of the Israeli military actions. While he did not explicitly name Israel, the remarks were interpreted as an unusual critique of their operations in Lebanon.
The bombardment has particularly escalated following the launch of rockets by Hezbollah, a militant group based in Lebanon. In retaliation, Israeli forces systematically targeted over 100 sites within Lebanon in one attack, prompting fears of further escalation in hostilities that could complicate negotiation efforts surrounding the ceasefire.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has condemned the Israeli strikes, claiming they contravene the ceasefire agreement established between Iran and the US. This situation is viewed as a potential roadblock to ongoing negotiations.
India is monitoring developments closely, having reached out to various nations within the region. Notably, Indian Petroleum Minister Hardeep Puri made a trip to Qatar earlier this month to strengthen bilateral relations and secure energy supplies. Puri’s discussions included exchanges with Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani of Qatar, emphasizing India’s commitment to energy security. Qatar is a key energy supplier for India, notably in liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas.
In addition to diplomatic efforts in the Gulf region, India has been active in ensuring the safety of its nationals in Lebanon, which number approximately 1,000. The Indian embassy in Beirut is coordinating closely with its citizens to ensure their safety during this crisis.
Regarding the return of Indian nationals from other affected areas, it was announced that 2,180 Indian citizens, including students and fishermen, have been repatriated from Iran through neighbouring countries. As conditions in Lebanon remain volatile, the Indian government is reaffirming its commitment to monitor the evolving situation and provide necessary support to its citizens abroad.
