The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) welcomed industry partners, students, and their families to its annual Industry Support presentation event. Horticulture students were recognised for their interest and potential, receiving five bursary awards with a combined value of £7,500.
For more than 25 years, Greenmount Campus has delivered Higher Education programmes in Horticulture and, in that time, built strong partnerships with businesses across the sector. These valued industry connections provide generous support through the Horticulture Industry Supporters Programme, offering bursary awards to CAFRE students undertaking the Foundation Degree and Honours Degree courses. Their commitment plays a vital role in encouraging talent, supporting learning, and strengthening the future of the industry.
Mr Paul McHenry, interim CAFRE Director addressed attendees of the Bursary presentation. He commended the sponsoring organisations for recognising the value of supporting students training to enter careers within the horticulture industry.
In his remarks, Mr McHenry commented: “The Horticulture sector in Northern Ireland encompasses a wide range of roles from speciality crop production to garden design. It provides employment opportunities for approximately 14,000 people directly and 6,000 people indirectly. Horticulture helps to address some of our most pressing problems such as food security and climate change. Horticulturists are leading the transition to growing plants in peat free compost and continue to improve the environment for our communities through their work in parks and landscaping. We are very grateful to the organisations here today supporting our Horticulture students as they embark on obtaining their qualification for careers in a transformative sector.”
