For fans of crime dramas, certain heavyweight titles invariably dominate discussions. Series such as Breaking Bad and The Sopranos are frequently regarded as the benchmark, with devotees perpetually arguing over which reigns supreme.

However, there’s another TV programme that numerous viewers believe warrants a place at the very pinnacle of that roster.

It’s been steadily cultivating a formidable reputation through the years, boasting solid ratings and a dedicated following who maintain it’s amongst the finest ever produced.

The programme also commands an impressive 93% critics score and 85% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

One viewer stated in an IMDb review: “The best crime drama you will ever come across. The writing and acting are as good as anything you’ll see on television. I really can’t recommend this show enough. It’s absolutely amazing!”

The programme in question is Fargo, the acclaimed crime drama conceived by Noah Hawley for FX.

Another reviewer commented: “Ultimate crime show masterpiece. It’s just an incredible series. Fargo is an absolute masterpiece and one of my favorite shows all time.”

Initially launched in 2014, Fargo draws inspiration from the 1996 film by Joel and Ethan Coen, who subsequently came aboard as executive producers after being captivated by the script.

The programme is an anthology series, meaning each season presents a different narrative with fresh characters, locations and timelines.

Despite this structure, all seasons exist within the same universe, frequently featuring subtle connections and overlapping themes.

Most of the narratives are set in the American Midwest, particularly Minnesota, and follow a mixture of criminals, law enforcement and ordinary individuals whose lives become entangled in violent and often unexpected circumstances.

The series has also received widespread acclaim from critics and secured numerous awards.

It has claimed seven Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited Series for its debut season, alongside three Golden Globe Awards, including Best Miniseries or Television Film.

Throughout the years, Fargo has accumulated more than 50 awards from over 200 nominations.

It has also earned praise for its performances, with actors including Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Kirsten Dunst and Jon Hamm all appearing across different seasons.

All five seasons of Fargo are available to stream on Prime Video.
