Netflix Confirms KPop Demon Hunters Sequel After Success

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Netflix has officially confirmed it is developing a sequel to the animated feature K-Pop: Demon Hunters. The decision follows the phenomenal success of the initial film, which not only dominated global viewership charts but also made history at several prestigious award ceremonies.

The streaming giant’s move to continue the saga of the HUNTR/X group is marked by a long-term exclusive contract with the creative team. As reported by People, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, directors of the first installment, are confirmed to helm the sequel. In addition to directing, the duo will be actively involved in the scriptwriting process.

Reportedly, the agreement includes a multi-year collaboration between Netflix Animation and the Kang-Appelhans duo to develop various other original animated projects. However, the primary focus remains on the continuation of the story of Rumi and her teammates.

“As Korean filmmakers, we are very proud that the global audience wants to see more Korean stories and characters in the world we’ve built,” said Maggie Kang.

An Achievement Paving the Way

The confirmation of a sequel is considered a logical step given the extraordinary achievements of its predecessor. Since its release in June 2025, K-Pop: Demon Hunters has reportedly been viewed over 500 million times, making it one of the most-watched Netflix original films of all time.

As reported by The Guardian, the film’s appeal lies not only in its stunning visuals but also in its music. The track “Golden,” the film’s lead single, won a Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media. This achievement was further bolstered by two nominations at the 2026 Oscars for Best Animated Feature and Best Original Song.

Plot Teasers: Uncovering the Past

While an official release date has not been set, with industry estimates placing it around 2029 due to the complex animation process, initial plot teasers have begun to emerge. The creative team hinted that the sequel will delve deeper into the backgrounds of the HUNTR/X members. While the first film focused on Rumi’s journey, this second installment is expected to provide more room for the character development of Mira and Zoey.

Chris Appelhans said they have prepared rich backgrounds for the other HUNTR/X members from the beginning. Additionally, the fate of Jinu, which remained uncertain at the end of the first film, is expected to receive a resolution that satisfies fans.

The K-Pop: Demon Hunters phenomenon illustrates the powerful influence of Korean pop culture in the global entertainment industry. Its success extends beyond cinema, reaching the international music industry through its performance on global charts.

With the confirmation of this sequel, Netflix appears to be building a sprawling universe. Rumors suggest that, apart from the second film, the streaming service is also considering spin-off series or even a musical stage show to expand the K-Pop: Demon Hunters franchise.
