Police issue Altrincham Interchange update as man in hospital after ‘substance’ incident


A teenager has been arrested following the incident that closed Altrincham Interchange

Police have issued an update after an ‘unknown substance’ was thrown on a man at Altrincham interchange. Emergency services were called to the scene at around 6.20pm on Thursday (March 26).

Police, paramedics and fire crews erected a scene which remained in place for a number of hours. The bus station was temporarily closed with services suspended amid the incident.

Now, in a new statement, Greater Manchester Police have confirmed an unknown powder was thrown over a man. No injuries were reported, however the man has been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure.

It’s understood the powder is not currently being considered as harmful. A teenager was arrested at the scene and has been taken into custody.

A spokesperson for the force said: “Officers are responding to an incident at Altrincham Interchange. At approximately 6.20pm this evening (26 March 2026) an unknown powder was thrown on a man. Emergency services attended and at this time no injuries have been reported however he has been taken to hospital as a precaution.

“A 17-year-old boy has been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated assault and possession of class B drugs, and remains in custody for questioning.”

Emergency services were seen parked up along Stamford New Road after the incident, which saw the bus station closed off beside the train station. Paramedics were also in attendance along with incident response units.

The Bee Network confirmed at around 7.30pm that the interchange was closed to bus services until further notice. “We apologise for any inconvenience caused to your journey,” a statement read online. It later reopened at around 9pm.
