A man has been arrested after a car struck multiple pedestrians in the city centre of Britain’s Derby on Saturday night, police said.
The incident occurred on Friar Gate at around 9:30 pm, leaving several people injured, some seriously. Emergency services treated victims at the scene before taking them to nearby hospitals for further care.
Derbyshire Police said officers quickly stopped a vehicle believed to be involved, a black Suzuki Swift, shortly after the collision. The driver, a man in his 30s, was arrested and remains in custody.
Authorities have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the vehicle being driven in the area around the time of the incident.
“Our investigation is in its early stages but we want to hear from anyone who saw a black Suzuki Swift being driven in Derby around the time of the incident.” Derbyshire Police said.
Police have cordoned off Friar Gate from the junction with Curzon Street and Cheapside to Ford Street, warning that the road will remain closed for a considerable time. Motorists and pedestrians have been advised to avoid the area.
While describing the incident as alarming, police reassured the public that they do not believe there is any ongoing threat.
