Michael Vaughan supports young player Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s call-up for India’s white-ball tour of England following IPL performance.
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a rising star in Indian cricket, has gained significant attention following his remarkable performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. After scoring a rapid 15-ball half-century for Rajasthan Royals against Chennai Super Kings, the 15-year-old has caught the eye of former England captain Michael Vaughan, who has advocated for his inclusion in the Indian squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of England in July 2026.
Vaughan made his comments during a discussion on Cricbuzz, noting Sooryavanshi’s potential to become the youngest Indian to debut in men’s international cricket, breaking Sachin Tendulkar’s record set in 1989. Tendulkar made his debut at the age of 16 years and 205 days. Vaughan expressed that exposing Sooryavanshi to the Indian team environment early could be beneficial for his development.
He stated, “I am just looking ahead here, and I know we’re probably getting ahead of ourselves since it’s only the first innings of the IPL. But with a white-ball tour of England coming up in a few months, if I were Indian cricket, I’d take him on that tour.” Vaughan acknowledged that while Sooryavanshi may not start every game should he be included in the squad, he believes that it is important for the young cricketer to experience being part of the team.
Former Indian all-rounder R Ashwin provided a counterpoint, urging patience regarding Sooryavanshi’s development. While recognising his talent, Ashwin remarked that it is essential not to burden the young player with immediate expectations, emphasising that he has a long career ahead. “Don’t give him such a target. He is not even a guy, he is a kid,” Ashwin communicated on his YouTube channel. He highlighted that if Sooryavanshi maintains a professional career similar to former Indian captain MS Dhoni, he still has many years left in cricket.
Despite growing calls for his inclusion in the national squad, Sooryavanshi remains focused on his current performance in the IPL. The young batter will aim to sustain his momentum in the upcoming match for the Rajasthan Royals against Shreyas Iyer’s Punjab Kings on April 3 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
In his recent innings against Chennai Super Kings, Sooryavanshi’s 52 runs off just 17 balls significantly contributed to the Royals’ victory by eight wickets. He forged an opening partnership of 75 runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal, where Sooryavanshi’s aggressive batting style helped the team secure their win.
As he continues to impress in the tournament, discussions about his role in the international cricket arena are likely to intensify. Many analysts and fans alike believe that he represents a bright future for Indian cricket, potentially following in the footsteps of cricketing legends. The talk around Sooryavanshi’s selection will be closely monitored as he seeks to build on his IPL success and make a case for his inclusion in the national setup as discussions about the England tour commence.
