Kai Rooney has shone for Manchester United’s Under-16s team this season but has now revealed a devastating blow
Kai Rooney has issued a statement to confirm that he will miss the rest of the season for Manchester United‘s Under-16s. The teenager is one of United’s most promising academy talents.
The son of United’s all-time leading goalscorer Wayne Rooney, the 16-year-old has made great progress at Carrington this season. Rooney won the Premier League Shield with United’s Under-16s on Tuesday.
Michael Carrick’s son, Jacey Carrick, also featured in the 2-0 win over Burnley. But he is now set for a lengthy period on the sidelines due to injury.
Posting on his Instagram stories, he said: “Disappointed to be out for the rest of the season. Back stronger next pre-season,” followed by a love heart emoji.
Kai has enjoyed an exceptional year with United’s youth teams, scoring goals for the Under-18s and earning his first scholarship within the club’s youth system. He will be eligible to sign a professional contract next season.
The Under-18s have reached the semi-final stage of the FA Youth Cup and the final of the Premier League Cup. But Kai will be unable to feature.
Nevertheless, Kai appears to have a bright future in the game. The young star has joined Triple S Sports, an agency with which his father also holds a long-term agreement. United first-team players, including Harry Maguire, are among their roster.
And his mother, Coleen, has previously acknowledged in an interview with The Times that Kai is accustomed to the spotlight given his illustrious surname.
She said: “He’s lived it from a young age. When we used to go to matches when he was younger and he’d get a lot of people coming up saying, ‘Oh, are you Wayne Rooney’s son?’
“But he is strong-minded and he always has been. I’ve got no worries about the way he deals with it. It’s nice that we know what to expect.
“And we can try to guide him. Obviously, it’s his life, his passion. He can decide what he wants to do. But I think it’s good we’ve got the knowledge.”
