West Oxfordshire council backs Great British Spring Clean

The UK’s largest mass participation environmental campaign is organised by the charity Keep Britain Tidy and the council is encouraging residents, community groups, and parish and town councils to take part.

It is providing litter grabbers and sacks to individuals and groups, with the option to keep equipment for ongoing use.

It will also arrange collection of waste gathered during organised litter picks.

Councillor Lidia Arciszewska, executive member for the environment at West Oxfordshire District Council, said: “We’re delighted to support the Great British Spring Clean again this year and encourage residents to get involved.

“Litter picking is a simple but powerful way for people to make a visible difference in their community.

“By making equipment available and allowing volunteers to keep it for longer if needed, we hope to support the fantastic ‘litter heroes’ across West Oxfordshire who help keep our district clean and beautiful.

“The Great British Spring Clean is also an opportunity to remind everyone to take responsibility for our shared spaces by not littering.

“Littering harms the environment and detracts from the natural beauty of our district, which we all have a role in protecting.”

Since the campaign began in 2016, volunteers have pledged to collect more than 4.5 million bags of litter.

Keep Britain Tidy estimates that around £30 per household is spent each year clearing litter across the UK.

West Oxfordshire residents can request equipment through the council’s website.
