Tragedy in Jasola: Missing Delhi Teenager Found Dead After Falling into Open Drain

New Delhi: A four-day search for a 15-year-old boy in Southeast Delhi has ended in heartbreak. The body of the teenager, identified as Mithun, was recovered on Tuesday after he reportedly fell into an open drain while chasing a kite last Saturday.

Mithun, a Class 8 student and the child of migrant labourers from Uttar Pradesh, disappeared at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday. For nearly 96 hours, his family held onto a desperate hope that he would be found alive. The tragedy sparked a massive multi-agency search operation involving the Delhi Fire Service, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local divers.

The case drew national attention after a harrowing video surfaced on social media, showing the boy’s father braving the hazardous conditions of the open drain, searching for his son with a stick in hand after official rescue efforts initially struggled to locate him. The footage prompted widespread public outrage over the lack of safety measures surrounding the city’s open drainage systems.

Official Accountability

In the wake of the incident, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) moved quickly to assign blame. A junior engineer from the South East (Central) Zone has been suspended for alleged dereliction of duty, with the civic body confirming that formal disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against the official.

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed her profound grief and strong displeasure regarding the lapses that led to the death. According to a CMO official, the Chief Minister had issued a strict directive to the Chief Secretary to identify the jurisdiction of the drain and ensure immediate action was taken against the responsible parties.

A Preventable Tragedy

For a family living on the margins, the loss of a child to an exposed urban hazard has highlighted systemic failures in city infrastructure. As residents and activists mourn, the incident has reignited calls for the government to secure or cover all open drains across the national capital to prevent further preventable death.
