Johar opened up about a particularly vivid confrontation with an angry woman following a preview screening, while also acknowledging the film’s shortcomings, including its excessive scale and certain “unnecessary songs.” Despite the criticisms, he maintains that the film’s emotional core remained consistently sincere.

Released on August 11, 2006, ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ instantly became one of Karan Johar’s most debated films. Featuring a stellar cast including Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukerji, Abhishek Bachchan, and Preity Zinta, the romantic drama dared to explore themes of marital dissatisfaction, emotional infidelity, and the complexities of love and desire – subjects that often challenged conventional Bollywood narratives.
Ahead of the film’s two-decade milestone, Johar shared his reflections in a detailed Instagram post. He recounted an experience at a paid preview the night before the official theatrical release, where he sat anonymously amongst the audience. He distinctly recalled observing a middle-aged couple’s strong reactions to a pivotal scene between Shah Rukh Khan’s Dev and Rani Mukerji’s Maya. Their discomfort, he noted, escalated significantly during the sequence where the two characters surrender to their mutual feelings inside a hotel elevator.
The Confrontation: “Shame on you!”
One of the most impactful reactions, as Johar remembers, occurred immediately after the screening. A woman approached him with her crying daughter. Initially, Johar assumed she had been deeply moved by the film’s emotional weight. However, her true sentiments were far from appreciative.
As quoted by Mid Day, Johar recalled the encounter: “I stepped out with mixed feelings, and a lady and her crying daughter came up to me (I honestly thought she was moved by the movie). She asked, ‘Are you Karan Johar!!??’. I said yes, with fearful pride. She said, ‘I took my daughter to see a happy film with songs and dances and family values because it’s YOUR film. The DAY she got her DIVORCE and this is what I saw!! Shame on you’. I was worried she may hit me, so I scurried away from her and encountered some more angry faces.”
The divided response, Johar stated, only intensified after the film’s wider theatrical release. While a segment of the audience applauded its bold and emotionally honest portrayal of relationships, many others felt that its treatment of marriage and infidelity clashed with deeply entrenched traditional family values.
Johar also shared another intriguing anecdote from an airport lounge several weeks post-release. A woman confided in him that she had, in fact, enjoyed ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna,’ despite having told her husband otherwise. Relieved by her confession, Johar inquired about her reasons for concealing her true opinion. The woman explained that admitting her fondness for the film could have led to “uncomfortable questions” from her husband. She elaborated, “I loved your film but I lied to my husband and told him I hated it… If I told him I loved it, he would have asked me what I liked about it, so it was safe to lie.”
Acknowledging Flaws: “Over-bloated” Yet Sincere
Two decades on, Johar has gained the perspective to acknowledge the film’s shortcomings. He openly admitted that the production scale was “excessive” and that certain songs were “unnecessary.”
“I don’t deny the flaws of the film… It was over-bloated in scale and had opulent (and some unnecessary) songs to pander to my understanding of the mainstream, but I always felt it had its heart in the right place,” the filmmaker stated. Johar also clarified that the film was never intended to endorse infidelity. He emphasized, “The film did not endorse infidelity (that was never ever my intention), but it did show that stepping out of the boundary of marriage to seek love or desire can destroy your very foundation and family.”

Despite its initial polarising reception in 2006, ‘Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna’ has continued to fuel discussions over the years.
