Playback singer AR Ameen, son of renowned music composer AR Rahman, has publicly addressed a minor road accident he was involved in near Guindy, Chennai, on Monday. Following initial reports, Ameen clarified his involvement via social media, while his sister, singer-composer Khatija Rahman, also issued a statement providing further details and urging responsible reporting.
Dispelling accounts that he was behind the wheel, Ameen stated unequivocally that he was a passenger at the time of the incident. In an Instagram Stories post, he wrote, “Yesterday, on the way to the airport, I was in the passenger seat of my friend’s car when we got into a minor accident. By God’s grace, everyone involved is safe and okay. All praises to the Almighty (EPI) for His grace and protection over all of us.”
Ameen expressed profound gratitude to those who offered their support and concern in the aftermath. “I want to sincerely thank my family, friends, and well-wishers who reached out, checked on me, and sent their love and prayers. It truly means more to me than I can express. I also believe that my grandma’s, my dad’s, and GV Anna’s prayers and values continue to guide and protect me. I will always carry their teachings with me and strive to live by everything they have instilled in me.”
Subsequently, Ameen reshared a statement from his sister, Khatija Rahman, which corroborated his account and shed more light on the circumstances. Khatija detailed, “Ameen was on his way to the airport, seated in the passenger seat, while his friend was driving. A driver in another vehicle ahead of them moved forward despite the signal being red, which resulted in a minor collision.”
Khatija reiterated the safety of all parties involved, stating, “By God’s grace, Ameen, his friend, and the occupant of the other vehicle are all safe.” She also took the opportunity to appeal to media outlets and the public, requesting that they verify information with the family before publishing details to prevent ‘unnecessary worry and distress’.
Contrary to the family’s statements, local police provided a differing account to Hindustan Times, indicating that Ameen was reportedly driving a luxury SUV when it collided with a hatchback operated by a cab aggregator. Police reports suggest the incident occurred during the early hours of Monday. While no fatalities were reported, Ameen, his friend, and the hatchback driver sustained minor injuries and were discharged after receiving basic first aid. Both vehicles involved have been taken into custody.
According to police statements, the accident transpired around 3:30 AM as the SUV was traveling towards Guindy. The hatchback, which was reportedly on the left side of the road, allegedly entered the main lane, leading to the collision.
Authorities have registered a case under relevant provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. These include Section 337, pertaining to injuries caused by an act endangering human life, and Section 279, which addresses rash or negligent driving on a public road. Investigations into the precise sequence of events are expected to continue.
