Pune, India – August 14, 2026 – The 16th edition of the Hockey India Junior Women National Championship is set to commence today in Pune, marking a significant stride in the development of women’s hockey talent across the nation. A record 30 teams will vie for national honours across a newly expanded three-division structure, with competition running until August 23, 2026. This innovative format promises not only fierce competition but also a robust pathway for growth and progression for junior athletes.
The championship is meticulously structured into Division A, Division B, and Division C, a strategic move designed to create varied competitive environments and facilitate seamless movement of teams based on performance. This hierarchical system ensures that teams compete at an appropriate level, fostering development while also providing incentives for excellence through promotion and demotion mechanisms.
Division A: The Battle for the National Title
Division A, the pinnacle of the championship, comprises 12 elite teams, strategically divided into four pools. Pool A features traditional powerhouses Jharkhand, Punjab, and Chandigarh. Pool B promises intense clashes with Haryana, Odisha, and Bengal. In Pool C, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Manipur will compete, while Pool D sees Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, and Himachal battling it out.
The Division A league stage will kick off on August 16, with each team engaging in round-robin matches within their respective pools. The top two teams from each pool will advance to the coveted quarterfinals on August 20. The high-stakes semifinals are scheduled for August 21, culminating in the third-place match and the grand final on August 23, where the national champions will be crowned. For the teams finishing 11th and 12th overall in Division A, the challenge will be to regain their spot, as they face relegation to Division B for the subsequent edition, underscoring the competitive nature of the tournament.
Divisions B & C: Nurturing Talent and Promoting Growth
The tournament’s expanded format extends its reach to Division B, which hosts 10 teams split into two pools. Pool A includes Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Delhi, Kerala, and Mizoram, while Pool B comprises Karnataka, Uttarakhand, Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Goa. A significant aspect of Division B is the opportunity for upward mobility; the top two teams from this division will earn a well-deserved promotion to Division A for the next championship, providing a strong incentive for aspiring states. Conversely, the bottom two teams will face relegation to Division C, maintaining the competitive dynamic of the tiered system.
Division C, with its eight participating teams, forms the foundational tier of this robust structure. Pool A features Arunachal, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu, Rajasthan, and Tripura. Pool B includes Puducherry, Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, and Telangana. The top two performing teams in Division C will earn promotion to Division B, completing the cycle of progression and offering a clear pathway for emerging talents and developing states to climb the national ranks.
