Mumbai, India – Shraddha Kapoor’s much-anticipated biopic, Eetha, has officially altered its theatrical release schedule. The makers have announced a new premiere date of December 4, moving it from its original August 28 slot. This strategic decision effectively avoids a high-stakes box-office confrontation with Yash’s upcoming film, Toxic: A Fairytale For Grown-Ups, and sets the stage for a new competitive landscape later in the year.
Postponement Averts Raksha Bandhan Showdown
Directed by Laxman Utekar, Eetha was initially slated for an August 28 release, placing it directly opposite Yash’s eagerly awaited pan-India venture during the auspicious Raksha Bandhan weekend. The revised schedule now ensures this potential clash is entirely averted. While Toxic remains confirmed for a worldwide release on August 26, Eetha will now open nearly three and a half months later.
The new December 4 release window will see Eetha sharing the slot with an untitled comedy directed by Anees Bazmee, starring Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan. This isn’t the first significant date change observed in the August lineup this year. Rajkummar Rao’s Prahaar had also previously moved out of its original August 7 opening, and a fresh release date for that film is yet to be announced.
Title Controversy and Cultural Connect
Earlier this year, the film’s title itself became a subject of considerable debate. Following the premiere of Eetha‘s first teaser in theaters alongside ‘Cocktail 2’ and its subsequent online release, the Film and Cultural Department of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) raised objections. The party contended that the title “Eetha” did not adequately honor the esteemed stature of Vithabai Narayangaonkar, suggesting that the film should simply be named Vitha or Vithabai. They emphasized Vithabai’s role as a cultural torchbearer of Maharashtra’s Tamasha tradition, rather than merely another folk performer.
Initially, Vithabai’s children and grandson lent their support to this demand. However, her grandson, Mohit Narayangaonkar, later clarified that director Laxman Utekar personally explained the creative rationale behind the chosen title, leading to the family’s acceptance. Looking ahead, Shraddha Kapoor and the production team are reportedly planning a visit to Narayangaon, the village deeply intertwined with Vithabai’s legacy. Speculation suggests that the official trailer launch might take place from this significant location, a strategic move aimed at reinforcing the film’s cultural connection with audiences, particularly in Maharashtra.
